# Why Is My Wi-Fi So Slow? How to Fix Dead Zones and Dropouts at Home

The real reasons home Wi-Fi is slow or drops out (router placement, old equipment, walls and interference) and the fixes that work, from free tweaks to mesh systems.

By the Wisconsin Tech Shop team · Updated October 31, 2026

**Short answer:** slow home Wi-Fi is usually caused by the router's location, an old router, thick walls and floors, or too much house for one router to cover. Test your speed next to the router first: if it is fast there but slow elsewhere, the fix is better Wi-Fi coverage (placement, a mesh system or wired access points), not a pricier internet plan.

## Quick checks you can do today

- **Test next to the router, then in the problem room.** A big drop means a coverage problem.
- **Move the router** out of cabinets, basements and corners, ideally central and up high.
- **Restart the modem and router** and install firmware updates.
- **Use the 5 GHz or 6 GHz band** for devices near the router.
- **Count your devices.** Phones, TVs, cameras and gadgets add up.

## Fixes that work

| Problem | Fix |
| --- | --- |
| Dead zones upstairs, downstairs or in the garage | Mesh Wi-Fi or wired access points |
| Router more than five or six years old | Upgrade the router |
| Desk or TV that keeps buffering | Run an Ethernet cable |
| Slow everywhere, even next to the router | Check the internet plan and provider |
| Rural home with slow internet | Compare Starlink, fixed wireless or cellular |

## Why Wisconsin homes are tricky

Plaster walls, brick, stone basements, long ranch homes and detached garages all block Wi-Fi. Mesh systems and wired access points are made for exactly this.

## Frequently asked questions

### Do Wi-Fi extenders work?

Basic extenders often cut speeds in half and create a second network. A mesh system works better for most homes.

### Should I pay for faster internet?

Only if speed is slow right next to the router. If it is fast there but slow in other rooms, faster internet will not help.

### How many access points do I need?

Many homes need two or three mesh units. Large or oddly shaped homes, or homes with detached buildings, may need more, or a wired run.
