Guide # Locked Out of Your Domain, Website or Google Business Profile? How to Get Back In Lost the login to your domain, website or Google Business Profile, or a former designer or employee has it? Start with account recovery on the email address the account was registered to, gather proof that the business is yours, and then move every account into a login the business controls, not one person’s personal email. ## Why it happens - A past web designer, employee or family member registered the domain or website under their own email. - The recovery email or phone number is out of date. - Two-step verification is tied to a phone nobody has anymore. ## Step 1: Find out where each account lives - **Domain:** a WHOIS or RDAP lookup shows the registrar (GoDaddy, Squarespace Domains, Network Solutions, Cloudflare and so on). - **Website:** the hosting company or builder (a WordPress host, Wix, Squarespace or Shopify). - **Google Business Profile:** search your business on Google Maps. If it says “Own this business?”, nobody has verified it yet. ## Step 2: Recover or request access - Try “forgot password” on every email address the business has used. - If someone else holds the account, ask them to add you as an owner or transfer it. Most people will. - If they won’t or can’t, the registrar or platform has an ownership process. Expect to show a business license, tax document, utility bill or invoices in the business name. - For a Google Business Profile, request ownership from the profile. Google contacts the current owner and lets you appeal if they don’t respond. ## Step 3: Lock it down for good - Put every account under a business email like admin@yourdomain, not a personal one. - Turn on two-step verification with at least two people able to approve it. - Keep logins in a password manager, and turn on domain auto-renew and registrar lock. The registrant listed on a domain controls it, which is why it matters whose name and email are on it. Most situations end with a friendly transfer; the registrar’s ownership process is the fallback. ### How long does it take to recover a domain? A cooperative transfer can take minutes to a few days. A formal ownership claim with the registrar usually takes one to two weeks, depending on the paperwork. ### What if my domain already expired? Most registrars hold an expired domain for a grace and redemption period of several weeks.
