# Stripe vs. Square for Wisconsin Small Businesses

When to choose Stripe, when to choose Square and when to use both: in-person POS, online payments, subscriptions, invoicing and custom software.

By the Wisconsin Tech Shop team · Updated October 31, 2026

**Short answer:** choose **Square** if your business is mostly in-person retail or restaurant sales and you want an all-in-one POS with hardware out of the box. Choose **Stripe** if you sell online, bill by invoice or subscription, run a platform or marketplace, or need payments built into custom software. Many Wisconsin businesses use both, and that works fine.

## Side by side

| | Stripe | Square |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Best at | Online payments, subscriptions, invoicing, custom software, marketplaces | In-person POS for retail and restaurants |
| In-person hardware | Stripe Terminal readers (paired with software) | Complete POS hardware and apps |
| Online store | Through integrations or custom builds | Built-in Square Online |
| Subscriptions and billing | Very strong (Stripe Billing) | Basic |
| Marketplaces and split payments | Stripe Connect | Limited |
| Developer tools | Industry-leading APIs | Good APIs |

Fees change, so check each company's current pricing page. For most small businesses the per-transaction difference is small; the bigger costs are add-on software, failed payments and time spent reconciling.

## When Square is the better fit

- A café, shop or food truck that needs a POS today
- You want staff management, tips and kitchen tickets in one app
- Online sales are a small part of the business

## When Stripe is the better fit

- Your website or app is where most of the money comes in
- You bill by invoice, deposit or subscription
- You need payments inside custom software, kiosks or a marketplace
- You want detailed control over checkout and reporting

## Can you use both?

Yes. A common setup is Square at the counter and Stripe for online invoicing, subscriptions or a custom store, with both feeding QuickBooks. The key is keeping inventory and accounting in sync.

## Switching processors

Moving from Square or PayPal to Stripe is common. Saved cards can often be migrated securely, so customers do not re-enter payment details. See [switching to Stripe](https://wisconsintechshop.com/payments/payment-processor-migration/).

## Frequently asked questions

### Which is cheaper, Stripe or Square?

Standard online card rates are similar. The real cost difference usually comes from add-on software, hardware and how much manual work each setup creates for your team.

### Can Stripe work for in-person sales?

Yes. Stripe Terminal card readers handle tap, chip and wallet payments, paired with a custom POS or kiosk app.
