# 2D Animation: Puppets, Automatic Lip-Sync and Hand Drawing

Make a cut-out series, a storybook film or hand-drawn effects in the Animate tab. Puppets lip-sync themselves from the dialogue, drawings and puppets live in the same scene, and everything renders frame-exact.

## What you can do

### Cut-out puppets

Rig characters from parts with pivots, head turns, expressions and swappable drawings, or import a layered Photoshop (PSD) file.

### Automatic lip-sync

Type the line and mouth shapes are keyed to the voice automatically, then fine-tune them in the dope sheet.

### Reusable actions

Walk, run, jump and idle cycles play by themselves, and your own actions can be reused across scenes.

### Hand-drawn animation

Draw frame by frame with onion skinning, exposures and layers, and turn a drawing into a character.

### Multiplane camera

Layer backgrounds at different depths for real parallax, with keyed pans, zooms, dollies and camera shake.

### 2D effects

Sparks, smoke, dust, rain, snow, magic, confetti, portals, speed lines, impacts, speech bubbles and animated text.

### Vector drawing kit

Shapes, pen paths, booleans, gradients, textures and symmetry for characters, props and backgrounds.

### Character and set generator

Generate consistent rigged characters and multiplane locations from a style, so a cast stays on model for a whole series.

### Transparent output

Frame-exact PNG sequences with alpha for compositing.

## Questions

### Can I import characters from Photoshop?

Yes. Layered PSD files become puppets: groups become parts and mouth layers become mouth shapes. It reads 8-bit RGB files; layer masks and blend modes are ignored.

### How good is the lip-sync?

It keys English mouth shapes from the line’s words, timed to the voice. Fast speech can drift by a syllable, which you fix in the dope sheet.
