# 3D Animation and CGI: Sets, Characters, Cameras and Lights

The CGI tab is a 3D studio built for storytelling. Start from a library of scenes, characters, sets and props or build your own, direct the acting on a timeline, frame it with real lenses and render it at film quality.

## What you can do

### Sets, characters and props

A library of scenes, toon characters, sets and props to start from, and your own characters saved for reuse.

### Characters that act

Make a character say a line, gesture, emote, look at something or walk somewhere, as cues on the timeline.

### Real camera lenses

Focal length, aperture and focus on sensor sizes from Super 16 to large-format 65 mm, with dolly, crane, orbit and camera-shake moves.

### Keyframe anything

Position, rotation, color, light intensity and material values, with smooth, hold or Bezier curves.

### Lights and materials

Point, spot, directional and sky lights; standard and physically based materials; holdout and shadow-catcher materials for compositing.

### A 3D construction kit

Model toys, props and set pieces: lathe, extrude, sweep, loft, subdivide, mirror, boolean, bend and twist, sculpt and paint.

### Things stay where they belong

Objects rest on tables, hands hold props and characters walk around furniture, with a check that flags anything floating or passing through.

### Crowds

Walking or standing crowds of up to about 100 to 150 characters.

### Render passes

Depth, normal, object ID, mask and shadow passes as 16-bit PNGs for compositing.

### Space and planet shots

Ready setups for ships in deep space and daylight shots on a planet’s surface, with a physically based sky.

## Questions

### Can I bring in models from other 3D apps?

Yes. glTF and GLB models load directly. With Blender installed (free), Movie Maker also converts FBX, OBJ, DAE, USD, Alembic, STL and PLY models and BVH motion.

### Do I need a powerful graphics card?

A dedicated card helps. On a mid-range NVIDIA GTX 1660 Ti, a 1080p film-quality frame of a furnished room rendered in about 0.4 seconds.
