Can’t View Your Security Cameras Remotely? How to Fix It Safely
Cameras work at home but not on your phone away from home? Here is how remote viewing works, why it breaks and how to fix it without risky port forwarding.
Short answer: Remote viewing usually breaks because the camera system lost its connection to the maker’s cloud service, the app is signed in to the wrong account, or someone set it up with port forwarding that changed. The safe fix is to use the maker’s cloud app or a VPN, not open ports on your router.
Why it breaks
- The NVR or camera lost internet after a power outage or router change.
- The cloud or peer-to-peer service is turned off in the recorder’s settings.
- The phone app is linked to an old account or device ID.
- Port forwarding stopped working when your internet provider or router changed.
- Firmware is outdated and no longer works with the current app.
How to fix it
- Make sure the recorder or camera shows as online in its settings.
- Turn on the maker’s cloud or P2P service and re-add the device in the app.
- Update firmware on the recorder and cameras.
- Remove any old port forwarding rules and switch to the cloud app or a VPN.
- Change default passwords and turn on two-step login if offered.
Why port forwarding is risky
Opening ports exposes your cameras to the whole internet, and camera systems are a favorite target for attackers. Cloud apps from reputable makers or a VPN are much safer.

Frequently asked questions
Can I view my cameras without paying for a subscription?
Often yes. Many recorders include free remote viewing through the maker’s app; subscriptions usually add cloud storage of clips.
Is a VPN hard to set up for cameras?
Not with modern routers or tools like WireGuard and Tailscale. Once it is set up, your phone reaches the cameras as if you were home.
