Shopify Checkout Extensibility: What Store Owners Need to Change
Shopify is retiring checkout.liquid, additional scripts and Shopify Scripts. Here is what that means for your store’s checkout, tracking and discounts, and how to upgrade safely.
Short answer: Shopify is moving every store to Checkout Extensibility. Customizations made with checkout.liquid, additional scripts on the thank-you and order status pages, and Shopify Scripts need to be rebuilt with checkout UI extensions, app blocks, Customer Events pixels and Shopify Functions, or they stop working.
What is changing
- checkout.liquid customizations are retired for checkout pages.
- Additional scripts on the thank-you and order status pages are replaced by extensions and pixels.
- Shopify Scripts for discounts, shipping and payments are replaced by Shopify Functions.
Shopify publishes the dates for each change in the admin and its developer changelog, and they differ for Plus and non-Plus stores.
What to check in your store
- Settings → Checkout: look for upgrade notices and a customization report.
- Tracking pixels and conversion scripts on the thank-you page.
- Upsells, surveys or custom fields at checkout.
- Discount, shipping or payment rules in the Script Editor.
How to upgrade safely
- Rebuild customizations with checkout UI extensions or apps.
- Move tracking to Customer Events pixels and test conversions.
- Recreate discount logic with Shopify Functions.
- Test everything on a copy before publishing.
We handle these upgrades remotely. See Shopify Checkout Extensibility upgrades.
Frequently asked questions
Will my conversion tracking break?
It can, if tracking relied on additional scripts. Moving it to Customer Events pixels and testing keeps your numbers accurate.
Do non-Plus stores need to do anything?
Yes. Non-Plus stores also lose additional scripts on the thank-you and order status pages, so tracking and apps there need updating.
