Outlook Keeps Asking for Your Password? How to Fix It for Microsoft 365
Outlook asking for your password over and over, or failing to connect to Microsoft 365? Here are the common causes and step-by-step fixes, plus when it is a security warning.
Short answer: Repeated password prompts usually come from saved credentials that went stale, an outdated Outlook, a two-step login change or a broken profile. Clear the saved Microsoft credentials, update Outlook and Windows, sign in again with modern authentication and rebuild the Outlook profile if it keeps happening.
Common causes
- Old passwords saved in Windows Credential Manager.
- An outdated version of Outlook or Windows.
- Two-step login was turned on and Outlook didn’t catch up.
- A corrupted Outlook profile.
- Security settings in Microsoft 365, like conditional access.
How to fix it
- Close Outlook, open Windows Credential Manager and remove saved entries for Microsoft Office and Outlook.
- Update Office and Windows.
- Open Outlook and sign in, completing the two-step prompt.
- If it continues, create a new Outlook profile in Control Panel → Mail.
- Check that your account isn’t locked or flagged in Microsoft 365.
When it is a warning sign
If you see password prompts along with unfamiliar sign-ins, new inbox rules or emails you didn’t send, your account may be compromised. Change the password, check sign-in activity and turn on two-step login.

Frequently asked questions
Does this happen with the new Outlook too?
Yes, though less often. The fixes are similar: update, sign out and back in, and check the account’s security settings.
Will rebuilding my Outlook profile delete my email?
No. Microsoft 365 email lives in the cloud, and a new profile downloads it again.
