Cloudflare Error 521 or 522? How to Get Your Website Back Online

Both errors mean Cloudflare is working but can’t get an answer from your web server: a 521 means the server refused the connection, and a 522 means it took too long to respond. The fix is on the hosting side: the server is down or overloaded, a firewall is blocking Cloudflare, or DNS points to the wrong server.

Try this first

  1. Check your host’s status page and your account for suspension notices
  2. Confirm the DNS record in Cloudflare points to your current server IP address
  3. Ask your host whether the server is running and accepting web traffic
  4. Make sure the server firewall and security plugins allow Cloudflare’s IP ranges
  5. Check whether the server is overloaded, especially during traffic spikes
  6. Pause Cloudflare briefly to see whether the site loads directly

When it’s more than a quick fix

If the host says everything is fine but the error continues, or you don’t have hosting access, it takes someone who can check both sides.
