500 Internal Server Error on Your Website? How to Find the Cause

A 500 error means something on the server failed while building the page. On WordPress sites it’s usually a plugin or theme error, a corrupted .htaccess file, the PHP memory limit or a PHP version mismatch. The server’s error log tells you which, so start there.

Try this first

  1. Check the error log in your hosting control panel
  2. Undo the last change: an update, a new plugin or a settings edit
  3. Rename .htaccess, then re-save permalinks to create a fresh one
  4. Disable plugins by renaming the plugins folder, then re-enable them one at a time
  5. Ask your host to raise the PHP memory limit or confirm the PHP version
  6. Restore the most recent backup if nothing else works

When it’s more than a quick fix

If the error log is empty, you can’t reach the files, or the site takes orders or bookings, it needs careful repair before you lose more business.

How we fix it remotely
