Cloudflare Error 525 or 526? How to Fix SSL Errors Between Cloudflare and Your Server

These errors mean Cloudflare reached your server but the secure connection failed. A 525 means the SSL handshake failed, and a 526 means the server’s certificate isn’t valid under Cloudflare’s Full (strict) setting. Installing a valid certificate on the server, such as your host’s free certificate or a Cloudflare Origin certificate, fixes both.

Try this first

  1. Check the certificate in your hosting account and renew it if it expired
  2. Make sure it covers both the root domain and www
  3. Install your host’s free certificate or a Cloudflare Origin certificate
  4. Confirm the server accepts secure connections on port 443
  5. Keep SSL/TLS on Full (strict) once the server certificate is valid
  6. Clear caches and test in a private window

When it’s more than a quick fix

If certificates don’t renew automatically, or the error comes back every few months, fix the renewal setup instead of patching it each time.

How we fix it remotely

Questions

Should I switch SSL to Flexible to make the error go away?

It can hide the error, but it removes encryption between Cloudflare and your server and often causes redirect loops.

What is a Cloudflare Origin certificate?

A free certificate your server uses to prove itself to Cloudflare. Cloudflare trusts it; browsers don’t see it directly.
