Senior Email Defense on Your Phone
Read and write letters on an iPhone or Android phone, the same safe way as on the computer. Setting it up takes about five minutes, and a family member can do it for you.
How it works
Your phone shows the same letters as the computer at home. The phone gets them from the computer, so the computer needs to be turned on, with Senior Email Defense open.
When the computer can’t be reached, the phone still opens. It shows the letters you already read, and it keeps any new letters you write until it can send them.
Set it up, step by step
- 1
On the computer: open the family settings
Open Senior Email Defense. Click ⚙ Family settings and type the family PIN if it asks for one.
- 2
Turn on phone access
Click the Phones tab, then Turn on phone access. Wait until it says “Phones can reach this computer now.”
- 3
Make a code for the phone
Click Add a phone. A square code appears on the computer screen.
- 4
On the phone: scan the code
Open the phone’s Camera app and point it at the square code, like taking a picture. Tap the link that pops up.
- 5
Wait a few seconds
The phone says “Connecting…” and then “Last step.” The computer shows the phone in its list.
- 6
Put My Mail on the home screen
Follow the steps on the phone for iPhone or Android (they are also below). A My Mail button appears on the home screen.
Put My Mail on the home screen
On an iPhone
- Tap the Share button. It’s a square with an arrow pointing up, at the bottom of the screen.
- Slide the list up and tap Add to Home Screen.
- Tap Add in the top corner.
- Tap the new My Mail button on your home screen whenever you want your letters.
On an Android phone
- Tap the three dots ⋮ in the top corner.
- Tap Add to Home screen. It may say Install app.
- Tap Add or Install.
- Tap the new My Mail button on your home screen whenever you want your letters.
Using My Mail on the phone
- Tap a letter to read it. Tap ↩ Reply to answer.
- Tap ✉ Write a letter and pick who it’s for.
- Tap A+ to make the words bigger.
- Only people on the approved list ever show up, just like on the computer.
If it says it can’t reach the computer
Check that the computer at home is turned on, that Senior Email Defense is open on it, and that the phone has internet. Then tap Try again. Letters you write in the meantime are saved and sent by themselves later.
Removing a phone
On the computer: ⚙ Family settings, then Phones, then Remove next to the phone.
Questions
Does it work away from home?
Yes, wherever the phone has internet, as long as the computer at home is turned on with the app open. If the computer can’t be reached, the phone still opens and shows the letters already read.
Is it safe?
Yes. Everything between the phone and the computer is sealed with a key only those two have, so nobody in between can read it, including us. A phone can be removed from the family settings at any time.
The camera won’t scan the code. What now?
On the computer, under the code, click “Can’t scan the code?” to see a link. Open that link on the phone. Keep it private, like the code.
Does it use a lot of data or battery?
No. It only connects while My Mail is open, and letters are small.
What if the computer is turned off?
The phone shows the letters it already has and keeps any new letters you write. Turn the computer on and they’re sent by themselves.
