Compositing and Visual Effects: Masks, Tracking, Keys and More
Put things where they weren’t: cut out a subject, pin a picture into a screen, make titles follow a moving shot or put a 3D character into real footage. Every effect is ordinary clip data you can change, and it renders the same in preview and export.
What you can do
Masks and rotoscoping
Rectangle, ellipse or point masks with feather and expand, in add, subtract, intersect or difference mode, animated shape by shape.
Track mattes and keys
Use the clip above as an alpha or luma matte, or key out bright or dark areas with a luma key.
Corner pin
Pin a picture into a screen, sign or window by its four corners, and animate it.
Motion tracking
Track points on a moving shot, then stabilize it or make titles and graphics ride along with it.
Time effects
Speed ramps with keyframed time remapping, reverse, freeze frames and frame blending.
Motion blur
Real sub-frame motion blur with an adjustable shutter angle, like a film camera.
Effect layers
The FX tab makes explosions, muzzle flashes and other 2D effects that render with a see-through background.
CGI over live action
Put 3D characters into real footage with holdouts and shadow catchers, then match them with curves and grain.
Image sequences in and out
Bring in numbered PNG, JPG or WebP frames with transparency from Blender or any 3D app.
Questions
How accurate is the tracker?
The point tracker follows position very precisely. It doesn’t solve rotation or perspective on its own, so for those shots track four points and use the corner pin.
Is the color pipeline 10-bit?
No. Compositing and color run at 8 bits per channel: fine for web and most delivery, but not for heavy grading of log footage.
