Laptop Wi-Fi Keeps Disconnecting? How to Make It Stay Connected

If only one laptop keeps dropping, the cause is usually its Wi-Fi adapter: power saving switching it off, an outdated driver, or a weak signal on a crowded band. Updating the driver and turning off the adapter’s power saving fixes most cases.

Try this first

  1. Check whether other devices drop too; if they do, it’s the router or internet
  2. Update the Wi-Fi driver from the laptop maker’s site
  3. In Device Manager, turn off “Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power” for the adapter
  4. Forget the network and reconnect
  5. Remove old saved networks with similar names
  6. Try Network reset in Settings › Network & internet › Advanced network settings

When it’s more than a quick fix

Will a Wi-Fi extender help?

Only if the signal is weak. If it drops even next to the router, it’s a driver or settings problem.
